Railings Built for the Stairs You Already Have

Custom Metal Stair Railings, Fabricated and Installed by the Same Team

A handrail added for safety shouldn't make a home look like a commercial building, and a railing on a shared apartment stairway has to be built to last. We fabricate posts, rails, and infill to your stairs and your specifications.

CSLB Lic. #996452, Bonded & Insured Luis Sr. and Luis Jr. are both certified welders, and both are involved from field measurement through installation.
Fabricated to Your Stairs Rough measurements for estimating, laser measurements for fabrication, and physical templates for curves and difficult angles.
Finished for the Exposure For exterior projects exposed to coastal moisture and salt air, steel is hot-dip galvanized and then powder coated, and we use stainless steel anchors and hardware.

Stair Railings for Apartments, HOAs, Commercial Properties, and Custom Homes

Every stair is different, so every railing is built to the stair it serves. We fabricate custom stair railings in structural steel and iron and install them on the stairs, landings, and steps you already have:

  • Interior Stair Railings: Custom metal stair railings and handrails for interior staircases, from a clean modern profile to traditional ornamental ironwork.
  • Exterior & Outdoor Stair Railings: Railings for exterior stairways and landings at apartment buildings, condominiums, commercial properties, and homes. Where the existing railing is wood, we can build its metal replacement. Removal and disposal of the old railing is included in every proposal.
  • Apartment & HOA Common Stairways: Shared stairways serve a lot of residents, so we plan notice, parking, and work zones with property management before we start. See how we work on occupied properties.
  • Curved, Circular & Irregular Stairs: We roll curved handrails on our shop benders and build templates on site for tight radii, difficult turns, and uneven geometry.
  • Design Styles: Modern stair railings with an open look, using horizontal bars or flat-bar pickets, as well as traditional ornamental iron and hand-forged detail. Tell us the look you want. Custom profiles are built to order, not picked from a catalog.
Scope Boundary & Related Services:
This page covers railings installed on existing stairs. Building the staircase itself (stringers, treads, landings) is stair contractor work. We fabricate in steel and iron. We don't supply aluminum or glass railings or loose parts.

Replacing railings across an apartment or HOA property? See commercial railing replacement. Elevated decks and balconies? See deck & balcony guardrails. Working from an inspection report? See SB 721 railing repairs. All of it starts at our railing contractor page.

From Field Measurement to Finished Stair Railing

Owners, property managers, and general contractors get the same predictable workflow:

01

Scope & Photo Review

Send plans, sketches, or clear photos of your stairs. Luis Sr. and Luis Jr. review the layout and can often give a preliminary estimate. Photos can't replace a site visit for a firm price.

02

On-Site Measurement

We take rough measurements for estimating and precise laser measurements for fabrication. For a specialty piece with a difficult angle or turn, we build physical templates on site before anything is cut.

03

Itemized Written Proposal

You typically receive a comprehensive itemized proposal within 24-48 hours of the on-site visit. It covers materials, finish, and attachment details, with removal and disposal of the existing railing itemized from the start.

04

Fabrication & Finishing

Luis Sr. and Luis Jr. oversee fabrication at our El Cajon shop. Galvanizing and powder coating are completed by our finishing partners.

05

Installation & Cleanup

Our crew sets posts, secures anchors to the plans and specifications, removes and disposes of the old railing, and cleans the work area.

Working on Occupied Properties

Apartment and HOA stairways stay in use while we work, so we plan around the people who live there.

Advance Notice: We coordinate written notice through property management, at least 24 hours before work reaches a resident's area.
Parking & Staging: We secure parking and a staging area ahead of time so materials and trucks don't block residents.
Marked Work Zones: Safety cones define the work area, and cord ramps cover cords that cross walkways.
Safety Spotter: On larger multi-family jobs, a dedicated spotter watches for residents. Whenever someone walks past, cutting and grinding stop until they're clear.
End-of-Day Communication: Luis calls with an end-of-day progress update, including when the crew will return.
Before-and-After Photos: Photos document the work for owners and managers who can't be on site.

Add to the Existing Stair Railing or Install a New One

Luis gives owners a straight answer, and it comes down to the condition of the steel, not what's cheapest today. Here is how he sorts out a real job:

When Adding Bars Makes Sense

If the steel is sound and well maintained, adding bars can solve the problem. Luis has added intermediate bars to railings roughly 50 years old that had been repainted regularly and showed no structural compromise. The gaps were the issue, so closing them was the right fix.

When the Base Is Going

If posts have rusted through at the base plate or anchor, the rest of the railing is usually in similar condition, even when only one or two posts look bad. That tells you about the whole run, not just those posts.

What You Can See & What You Can't

Surface rust, bubbling paint, holes, and missing pieces are visible. Corrosion inside posts and at welds is usually worse than what shows on the outside.

When Spacing & Height Need Correcting

When both the opening spacing and the height need correcting, new railings are usually the better choice, especially when other areas are damaged.

Luis's Rule on Deteriorated Steel:
"When you touch it, you own it." Once he modifies a railing, he is responsible for the whole thing, so he recommends new work rather than a repair he can't stand behind.

*We fabricate, repair, replace, and install metal railings. We don't perform inspections, provide structural engineering, or issue compliance certificates. We work from the plans, specifications, or findings provided by the owner, property manager, inspector, engineer, or architect.*

Stair Railing Dimensions: Handrail Height, Grip Size, and Guard Openings

A stair railing usually has two jobs. The handrail gives you something to hold, and the guard keeps people from falling off an open side. They have different measurements, and on many stairs the top rail serves as both. The figures below are general guidance only. Requirements depend on the building's occupancy, the adopted California code edition, and local amendments, so confirm the specifics for your property with your building department or design professional. We fabricate and install to your approved plans and specifications.

Item Typical Requirement What It Means in Practice
Handrail height 34 to 38 inches, measured vertically from the line of the stair nosings One consistent height along the whole flight.
Handrail grip Round rails: 1¼ to 2 inches outside diameter. Other shapes must meet the code's graspability dimensions A rail you can't close your hand around does not qualify as a handrail.
Continuity & ends Continuous along the flight, with ends that return to a wall, post, or walking surface. Many non-residential stairs also require extensions: about 12 inches horizontal at the top and one tread depth at the bottom End details change fabrication, so they should be settled before measurement.
Where handrails are required Residential stairs: at least one side of a flight with four or more risers. Other occupancies are set by the Building Code Apartment and commercial stairs often need more than a typical home.
Guard height at open sides Commonly 42 inches. A lower stair-guard height can apply within dwelling units Check which category your stair falls under.
Guard openings Generally a 4-inch sphere must not pass. At stair guards within dwelling units, a 4⅜-inch sphere. The triangle formed by riser, tread, and bottom rail must stop a 6-inch sphere Picket and bar spacing is set by these limits, not by appearance.
Attachment: Base plate and anchor details follow the approved plans and specifications. Wood framing, stucco, and concealed attachments are the responsibility of the owner, framing contractor, or engineer. If we find conditions that need their attention, we flag them before installation.
Permits: Whether a railing project needs a permit depends on the scope, property type, and jurisdiction. The property owner or design team coordinates permit and plan requirements with the building department; we build to the approved scope.

Finishes and Hardware Built for San Diego Salt Air

Moisture is what corrodes exterior steel, and the whole coastal corridor from Imperial Beach to Oceanside is a hard environment for it. How long a finish lasts depends on exposure, the coating system, and maintenance.

  • Hot-Dip Galvanizing & Powder Coating: For coastal projects, fabricated steel is sent out for hot-dip galvanizing and then powder coated. All of our work receives a super-durable powder coat, available in black, bronze, and custom colors.
  • Stainless Steel Anchors & Hardware: Along the coast we use stainless steel anchor bolts and hardware. Galvanized bolts can corrode when moisture works into the drill holes, even when the holes are sealed.
  • Built in Our El Cajon Shop: Compound curves and rolled handrails are bent on our own benders, a hydraulic ironworker punches clean anchor holes in plate, and multi-cut saws keep long runs of pickets uniform.

"SD Custom Iron made a railing for a circular stairway for our new house in Julian. This was quite difficult because of the tight radius. Luis did an excellent job and completed the job on time. We are very happy with the result and I would recommend this company to anybody looking for quality custom iron work at a reasonable price."

"I have used SD Custom Iron Works (Luis) for many jobs, more recently on two apartment buildings for insurance compliance. I have also referred him to others where he has modified and/or installed new railings. He is responsive, dependable, polite and professional (as are his workers). Stair Railing Installation FAQs

Answers to common questions about custom stair railing fabrication, dimensions, code requirements, and installation.

What is the standard height for a stair handrail in California? +

Handrail height is generally 34 to 38 inches, measured vertically from the line of the stair nosings. Occupancy, the adopted code edition, and local amendments can change the details, so confirm the requirement for your property with your building department or design professional. We build to the height shown on your approved plans.

How thick should a stair handrail be? +

A round handrail generally needs an outside diameter of 1¼ to 2 inches so that a hand can close around it. Other shapes must meet the code's graspability dimensions. Rails that are too thick, too flat, or too wide to grip may not qualify as handrails.

How far apart can the bars or pickets be on a stair railing? +

Guard openings generally must stop a 4-inch sphere. At stair guards within dwelling units, the limit is generally a 4⅜-inch sphere, and the triangle formed by the riser, tread, and bottom rail must stop a 6-inch sphere. Which limit applies depends on your building's occupancy and the adopted code, so confirm it with your building department or design professional.

Can you install a new railing on my existing stairs? +

Yes. We install custom metal railings on existing stairs and landings. The structure beneath and behind the railing, such as wood framing, concrete, and stucco, has to be sound. If it isn't, the owner, framing contractor, or engineer must address it before we attach new metal. Building the staircase itself is stair contractor work.

Can you build a railing for a curved or circular stair? +

Yes. We roll curved handrails on our own shop benders and build physical templates on site for tight radii, difficult turns, and uneven geometry.

Do you remove my old stair railing, and can you replace a wood railing with metal? +

Yes to both. Removal and disposal of the existing railing is included in every itemized proposal, whether it is metal or wood. We sometimes replace wood railings with metal ones.

How do you protect exterior stair railings from salt air? +

For coastal projects, fabricated steel is hot-dip galvanized and then powder coated, and we use stainless steel anchors and hardware. How long a finish lasts depends on exposure, the coating system, and maintenance.

Do you inspect stairs or railings, or certify that they comply with code? +

No. San Diego Custom Iron Works is a metal contractor, not an inspection agency or engineering firm. We do not perform inspections, provide engineering calculations, or issue compliance certificates. We fabricate and install railings from the plans, specifications, or findings provided by the owner, property manager, inspector, engineer, or architect.

How do I get a quote for stair railing installation? +

Send plans, sketches, or clear photos of your stairs, and Luis can often give a preliminary estimate. For a firm price, Luis Sr. or Luis Jr. visits to take laser measurements, and you typically receive a comprehensive itemized written proposal within 24–48 hours of that visit.
